After several years of DJing at the annual Red Bull-sponsored “Battle of the Year” competition in Nigeria, Teck-Zilla was tasked with creating original music for the 2017 edition. The concept was to bring Afrocentric elements into the world of breakbeats, hence B-Boy Zilla was born.

This has since led to 3 distinct editions of the break beat series, which Teck-Zilla has taken to stages across Nigeria, Ghana, Togo and even in Asia.

As one of the official deejays for the “Battle of the Year” competition in Nigeria for breakdancers, I was tasked by the program director to come up with original breakbeats that could be used for the event. I already had a vast collection of break beats, so it was pretty much a case of searching through my archives and also doing some research on b-boy music with some tips from famed Florida turntablist DJ Chief and South African DJ Azuhl. This birthed the first edition of B-Boy Zilla, where most of the project was completed the night before taking the decks at the Red Bull event in 2017. Although BOTY Nigeria didn’t hold in 2018, I kept looking into the b-boy music scene and coming up with ideas and by the time 2019 rolled in, I had already prepared the second edition of B-Boy Zilla, and it was featured in the BOTY event that happened in that same year. Life took a different turn when covid hit in 2020 and the world was forced to stay indoors, but things started looking up around 2021 when Glo decided to sponsor the next edition of BOTY Nigeria, and we prepared to go on a 5-state tour with the finale in Lagos in early 2022.

The tour was filled with excitement, energetic performances and life-changing events, but more importantly showed the strength of collaboration across the board. Being on the road with so many people from different backgrounds gives one a different perspective on things. During that tour, I started working on several break beats to be used throughout the event and even ventured into West Coast funk for the popping and locking categories. Needless to say, it was a test of my versatility and quite humbling as well.

All that led to me being invited to Ghana in late 2022 at the behest of B-Boy Lyricx, the founder of Afrobreak Ghana, for the Afrobreak International Championship. The event had me as the headline DJ and also a speaker during the seminar. It was a tremendous success, and ultimately that exposure of my services saw the founder of Togo’s All Star Battle Internationale request me to headline their event in Lomé, Togo, in early 2023. Once again, I got to showcase my skills on the wheels of steel, and I remained the headline DJ for the 2023 and 2024 editions of All Star Battle Internationale.

I went back to Ghana in 2025 for another workshop / Youth Breaking League and finally for the 4th edition of the Afrobreak International Championship. I closed out the year with the release of B-Boy Zilla III and continue to work closely with the dance community across Africa and beyond.
